Pleasanton, California
Daniel (Dan) Angelo Chiolis, aged 90, passed away at his home on January 18, 2025 in Pleasanton, California. He was born on January 9, 1935 in Price, Utah to Angelo and Ida Chiolis. Daniel was the youngest of three children, with an older sister, Katherine, and the oldest, his brother Richard.
At age seven, Dan moved with his family from Price to San Jose after his father’s death. He grew to adulthood in San Jose, graduating from James Lick High School. After two years serving in the U.S. Army and a short time playing minor league baseball in Louisiana, he returned to San Jose and worked at various jobs while studying at San Jose City College and San Jose State University. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with a Minor in Spanish and his Master’s Degree in Physical Education. His goal was to become a teacher. It was during this time that he met Cathy Manley, whom he married in 1962.
Dan and Cathy Chiolis moved to Pleasanton, California in 1968 with plans to raise a family, pursue Daniel’s teaching career, and purchase a home. They adopted two children: Lisa and Steven. He would become a beloved and active teacher at two high schools: Dublin High School and Foothill High School. He taught Physical Education, Spanish, and Social Studies, and he successfully coached many soccer and golf teams. With Cathy, he purchased a home in Pleasanton in 1969, where he lived the remainder of his life, enjoying his growing family, pursuing his interests in classic cars, music, politics, and exploring his Greek heritage.
Dan is survived by his wife of 63 years, Cathy; his brother Richard; his sister-in-law Marilyn and brother-in-law Chip; his two children, Lisa and Steven; his daughter-in-law Melissa; his four grandchildren, Jessilyn, William, Danika, and Maia; his seven great-grandchildren, Leanne, Emerie, Zayden, Zoey, Zack, Rayah, and Fae; his nephews Mark Chiolis and Dan Stalker; his nieces Eileen Tetreault and Nancy Kacey, and many great- and great-great nephews, nieces, and cousins.
We are filled with gratitude for his full and giving life.
