Hazel Cortez
Nov. 15, 1926-Sept. 27, 2015
Pleasanton, California

Hazel Irene Josephs was born on November 15, 1926, near Brandon, Minnesota to parents Helen and Joe Josephs.

She grew up on a farm and learned how to milk cows, tend chickens, and plant strawberries from an early age. Mom loved growing up in the country. She had a deep love of nature and especially enjoyed the changing seasons.

Mom, and her twelve siblings, attended a one room school house. As a child she enjoyed writing stories and poems. She was an avid reader throughout her life.

She enjoyed gardening, garage sales, and antiques. She had a flair for decorating and her homes were always warm, inviting, and cozy. She was a fabulous cook who loved having family and friends gathered at her table.

It was love at first sight when she met her husband, Rudy Cortez. They enjoyed close to 40 years together. Rudy passed away in 1986 at the age of 60.

Mom had a deep faith and lived her life with compassion and love. She was truly a gentle soul.

Hazel and Rudy raised their children in South San Francisco. Following Rudy's passing, Hazel lived in Folsom. She moved to Pleasanton in 2004 to be near her daughter, Rachel.

While in Pleasanton, she lived at Ridgeview Commons where she was active in the community and made many new friends. She loved word games, Canasta, and cross word puzzles.

Hazel and her family are thankful for the kindness and care she received at Parkside Assisted Living where she spent her last two years.

Mom went to be Home with the Lord on September 27, 2015.

She is survived by her three precious children Rachel McElhinney, Joe and Andy Cortez, six cherished grandchildren, and four dear great grandchildren. Two of her sisters remain, along with many loving nieces and nephews.
