Kris Milligan
Nov. 12, 1954-July 21, 2026
Vacaville, California
Kris Milligan, a beloved tennis director, mentor, coach, father, and cherished member of the USTA tennis community, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026, at the age of 71 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Kris dedicated much of his life to the game of tennis, but his impact reached far beyond the courts. As a tennis director, he was known not only for his knowledge of the game, but for his passion for bringing people together through it. He believed tennis was about more than competition—it was about discipline, friendship, perseverance, and the relationships built along the way. To the players he coached and encouraged, Kris was more than a director. He was a mentor who pushed people to believe in themselves, a teacher who understood that every player had something to learn, and a friend who celebrated both the victories and the lessons that came from defeat. His presence on the court was unmistakable, and his dedication to the sport left a lasting impression on generations of players. Kris had a gift for making people feel welcome. Whether he was giving advice during a match, sharing a laugh between sets, organizing a tournament, or simply talking with friends and members of the tennis community, he had a way of making those around him feel like they belonged. Those who knew Kris will remember his love of tennis, his competitive spirit, his sense of humor, and most of all the relationships he built. The courts he cared for and the players he influenced will forever carry a piece of his legacy. Kris obtained his bachelor of Public Relations/Journalism from Drake University in 1977 and later was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a tennis player.
Over his career, Kris has operated tennis camps in Williamsburg, Hayward, San Ramon, and most recently Danville, California. Kris has authored two books, “A Family Guide to Tennis,” and “Gardiner’s Tennis Ranch: The Summer of 73.” Kris shared a special bond as a twin with his brother, Kevin Milligan, a highly accomplished artist and painter. Their lifelong connection was a defining part of Kris’ life — one of shared family, individual paths, and enduring brotherhood.
He is survived by his father, Guy; brother Gary (Sue) and sister, Lisa; as well as daughter and sons, Sarah (Carl) Friedel, Greg (Kai) Milligan and Ben (Dolly) Milligan. Niece Julie (John) Rhoades. Grandchildren; Hannah, Josh, Tim, Caleb, Banks, Mason, and Wes. Kris was predeceased by his mother, Jacquelyn and his brother Kevin.
