Barbara Jean Davis, 78, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on November 15, 2024, in Manteca, CA. Barbara was born March 31, 1946, in Nebraska, to parents, Donald and Angeline Willmes. When Barbara was a young child, her family moved to California and eventually made the Central Valley her home. She was a resident of Danville, Tracy, and Manteca for the past 49 years. When Barbara’s children were young, she and her husband, Eddie, enjoyed camping with the family at Lake Camanche, Orwood and Oakwood Lake, they would spend the entire summer enjoying the outdoors. In her free time, she was a volunteer at the SRVGAL snack shack for 10 years. Barbara was blessed to have retired from The Valley Times newspaper in Livermore. She was also her mother’s caregiver in her final days before her passing in 2011. Barbara loved going on road trips with the grandkids, she loved her grandchildren more than her own kids!! J. Jack Bras, a resident of Pleasanton for 60 years, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on November 9, 2024. Jack was born outside Okema Oklahoma on the eve of the 1929 Stock Market Crash and the Great Depression. His parents brought him and his younger twin brothers to California in 1936, where they worked picking cotton and grapes. He frequently mentioned that his childhood was straight out of "Grapes of Wrath." He was thrilled when he and his brother Charlie were interviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle for their April 20, 2014 front-page story on the 75 year anniversary of the publication of "Grapes of Wrath." After graduating high school in Fresno, CA, he received his BA in Architecture from Cal Berkeley in 1952 and continued to attend Cal/Stanford games for many years thereafter. He was tickled pink to receive a section of the bleachers from Memorial Stadium when it was renovated in 2010. He was drafted during the Korean War and stationed in Germany. It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Joyce Shapiro, 82, on November 2, 2024, at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, California, from complications of a stroke. Joyce passed peacefully with her family by her side. She was born in Rochester, New York, on January 12, 1942, to the late Frank Raymond Young and Ethelyn Isabelle Young (Jones). Joyce was the fifth generation of her family from Glens Falls in upstate New York. Early on, Joyce was active in sports, clubs, dramatics, cheerleading, and student government. She fostered her love for the outdoors by spending summers on Lake George, NY. Joyce moved to Menlo Park, California, with her sister Denyse and mother when her father joined Menlo Park–based Raychem Corporation. Joyce graduated from Menlo Atherton High School and later pursued commercial art and merchandising studies at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, and Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Ron Otvos, passed away on October 14, 2024, in Pleasanton, CA. He was born on June 25, 1946, in Syracuse, New York, and later moved to Pleasant Hill, CA, where he graduated from College Park High School and Diablo Valley College. Ron went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army. It was during high school that he met Kathy Cooper, the love of his life, and they recently celebrated 54 years of marriage. Ron was a man of deep faith who loved the Lord and cherished time with family and friends. He especially enjoyed fly fishing with his son Scott, spending time in Lake Tahoe, playing cards and games, traveling both locally and abroad, and cheering on his beloved San Francisco Giants and 49ers. Edward August Heuer III passed away on October 14, 2024 in Pleasanton, California, after a long battle with cancer. He was born on February 26, 1951, in Yankton, South Dakota. His family moved to Downey California in 1961, where he grew up, met and married his high school sweetheart. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Holly, 3 children, Jennifer (Srouji), Paul and Christopher Heuer and 8 grandchildren, Mason, Gianna and Hudson Heuer, Aidan, Ella, Ashley Srouji and Sierra and Hunter Heuer. He also leaves behind his brother Kurt and sisters Karen and Karyl, a large extended family and countless friends. Ed joined the National Guard in 1971 and fulfilled his duties in 1976. Dan Stober, journalist, backpacker, cyclist, family man, and adored father and husband passed away on Oct. 7, 2024, from Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia. Dan was born Sept. 23, 1949, by the banks of the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida to Mary and Julius Stober. He graduated from Riverside High School (named Robert E. Lee High School at the time) in 1967 and earned a degree in journalism from the University of Florida in 1973. Dan’s 30-year career in journalism started at a small newspaper in rural North Florida. He went on to write for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune and the Bradenton Herald (1977-1985), before moving across the country to the Bay Area to become the Alameda County bureau chief for The San Jose Mercury News. After 20 years as a reporter and editor for “the Merc,” he left with a heavy heart, having foreseen “the death of newspapers.” Dan joined the Stanford News Service in 2007 as a science writer and then served as the director of news and media relations, sadly leaving Stanford in 2016 due the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. After a journey that lasted over 103 years, our beloved father, Fred Weakley, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2024. Fred was born on July 1, 1921 in Burlingame, CA after his parents, Frederick and Laura, and brother, Robert, moved west from Pittsburgh. Soon after, the family moved to San Leandro, CA and his father started a business in Oakland that manufactured and sold men’s hats. In spite of opening the shop one month before the 1929 stock market crash and the start of the Great Depression, the family persevered and the hat shop, as it was simply known, survived and eventually thrived. While attending San Leandro High School, Fred met the love of his life, Grace Gale, and they were married on January 31, 1942. Fred was only 20 years old at the time, so he needed his parents’ permission, which they enthusiastically gave. A few weeks later, Fred was drafted into the Merchant Marines and sent to Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn for basic training. “Super” Sandy Manifesto (Barstad) made her final transition at 5:15pm on October 3rd, 2024, succumbing to a 13 year battle with Frontotemporal Dementia. Surrounded by her loved ones she passed peacefully in Dublin, California at the age of 76. Sandy was born on April 27th, 1948, in Oakland, California, to Omar and Margie Barstad (Heier). Sandy started dancing and acrobats at the age 5 and shifted into roller-skating at age 13. She won four National Titles with many local and state titles. She attended James Monroe Middle School, John Muir Jr. High, Pacific High School, and obtained a 2 year AA in Secretarial at Chabot College. James Patrick Hart, an Oakdale resident for nearly 40 years, passed away peacefully at his home after a short battle with cancer. He was 69 years old. Jim was born in Castro Valley, California in 1955. He was the third of seven kids born to Tom and Mary Hart. The family moved to Pleasanton, California in 1964. He graduated from Amador Valley High School in 1973. After high school, Jim attended Columbia Junior College while living at the Hart family cabin in Twain Harte. It was there he met Karen Smith, they married and started their family in Livermore, California. Jim had a life long love of building and fixing things. He earned the nickname “Emmitt” after the fix it man on the Andy Griffith tv show. He began Hart Construction in 1980 which he successfully ran for 40 years in the Bay Area and Central Valley building new homes, remodeling and custom cabinetry. Rosina was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico to Adolfo and Petra Shoemaker. She graduated from Loretto Academy and was a smart, resilient, quietly determined and positive woman who met life's challenges with grace and accomplished so very much. She had so many dear friends. Her working career spanned decades and many roles. She never stopped learning and leaning into new experiences, moving forward with the times. In 1961 she ventured to San Jose, California where she met the love of her life, Bob. They were married in Carmel, California, in 1963 and shortly thereafter began their family with twin boys. They made their home in Fremont, CA, before a work transfer took them to Chicago, IL, for three years. With a mere Bachelor of Arts degree and the computer programmer “right stuff”, he landed the job of a lifetime. From the beginning, in 1966, he was at the right place at the right time. After attending college at Washington State University, David entered on the ground floor of Solar System Exploration as an aerospace engineer on the Pioneer Project, at Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California. Charles was born May 18th, 1936, in Batavia, New York. He graduated from LaSalle High School and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. While in college, he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity and the ROTC program. After college, he worked briefly for Carborundum Company, until the warm weather of the west beckoned to him. Beginning in 1959, he began working at the Nevada Test Site near Las Vegas, NV. While in Las Vegas, he met and married his wife, Elaine. He continued his commitment to the military and our country by joining the Army Reserves, achieving the rank of Captain. By 1967, Chuck, Elaine and their two sons, Doug and Dwight, moved to Livermore where he started working at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. While there, he brought his skills of problem-solving and organizing to an array of projects including the Laser Program, Plant Engineering, and an Environmental Impact Report. It is with great sadness that we share news of the death of our beloved mother, Donalyn Rees Cowden. Donalyn passed away peacefully with family by her side on Aug. 21,2024. Born in Colombus, Ohio, Donalyn spent many happy years growing up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with her parents Merlin and Mildred Rees, and sisters, Maralyn and Karen. She married Wayne Cowden in1952 and together they were able to build a family and lifetime of love. As a little girl she enjoyed playing in the loft full of sawdust at her grandfather’s planing mill and cabinet shop with her sisters and cousins. In the years to come, she helped her father promote his John Deer Tractor business at the Iowa State Fair and during college she was invited to sing on the radio. After high school graduation, Donalyn attended Colorado Women’s College in Denver and earned her degree in Elementary Education from Colorado State College of Education in Greely, Colorado. George’s biggest passions were his faith, his family, music and serving others. He was a humble, down-to-earth guy who preferred shorts and flip-flops and always took time to say hello or stop and help a stranger. A 39-year resident of Pleasanton, George had a heart for wounded military veterans, even visiting many at Bethesda Naval Hospital. In 2013, inspired by those visits, he organized a benefit concert featuring Kenny Loggins at Wente Vineyards to support local wounded warriors. He was a committed servant of Christ and an active member of Valley Community Church for many years, where he played guitar, bass and sang in the worship band, was an elder, and led small groups. In 2010, he donated his kidney to a friend in need. His passion for his community led him to run for City Council in 2014. Always active, George enjoyed setting challenging athletic goals: He competed in several triathlons, ran a marathon, cycled a century, and completed the Alcatraz swim 10 times. Paul Richard (Dick) Hilleman III died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, August 17th, 2024, a few days after celebrating his 93rd birthday. He was born August 8,1931 in Pittsburgh, PA. His family moved to Curwensville, PA when he was young where he graduated from high school in 1949. He was active in many sports and treasured his friends and time spent hunting and working with his father on their model trains. He joined the Army and served during the Korean War at the rank of Sergeant First Class. Shortly after returning home to Curwensville, he married his wife of 65 years, Elaine Confer from Clearfield, PA. Leni was born at a North Carolina military base at 3 lbs. 8 oz. but overcame her rough start to become a very successful, independent, woman. She graduated from San Leandro High School in 1972. After 1 year at Humboldt State she decided to enroll in a vocational drafting program in Pocatello, Idaho. She became the 4th employee at Power Engineers as a drafter where she practiced her impeccable writing and drawing skills. When the company moved to Hailey, ID, they supported Leni to attend the University of Idaho to obtain her electrical engineering degree. She continued with Power until moving back to California to be near family. Leni pursued her engineering career in CA and obtained her Professional Engineering license. She held many jobs in that capacity, including Hershey’s Chocolate where she was transferred to Pennsylvania for a short time. Maria Virginia Vargas was born on April 22,1939 in Pedro Miguel, Faial, Azores Islands, and passed away peacefully on August 5, 2024, after her long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Maria and her husband Manuel immigrated to the United States in 1959 when she was 19 years old, and began their new life in Pleasanton, California. She was known by most of her family and friends as “Virginia.” She was a lifetime homemaker, and a loving and devoted wife and mother to her husband and three children. Maria’s life was marked by generosity and love for her family and friends. She advocated for those less fortunate, and the well-being of children by providing clothing and necessities. Maria dedicated her life to helping many immigrant families from the Azores and Brazil while they transitioned into their new life in the Tri-Valley. She would adopt families in need and provide them with clothing, food, English translation, and help them find employment. Kim was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister, as well as a treasured friend to many. Kim, known affectionately as “Kimmy,” had an infectious smile with which she spread her boundless joy and warmth. Steve entered the world in the winter of 1952, the third child of Jack and Mildred (Bradley) Parks. As he approached all matters of life, he exercised his tenacious determination and fought a courageous six-year battle with metastatic cancer. In late July, he succumbed to the disease surrounded by his loving family. Steve grew up in Antioch, California, attending schools there from 1958 until 1971. He was a resident until 1979. He was a stand-out athlete, playing both baseball and football during his high school years. His athletic abilities earned him a football scholarship to Oregon State University. She spent countless hours with her paternal grandfather, James, in her youth and considered him her idol. Josephine met Joseph Stellini (also from Mellieha) when she was 16. They fell in love and were married in August of 1954. Josephine emigrated to the U.S. to settle with Joe in San Francisco. They were together for almost 41 years until Joe’s passing in March,1995. Their family of 8 with 6 children; Joseph, Nicholas, Theresa, Maryann, Kathrine and Michael soon grew to 10 after becoming established in Sunol, they welcomed children 7 & 8 Joann and Antionette (Nettie). After graduating from Amador, Nicholas joined US Navy in 1955 and completed his enlistment in 1957. He served on the USS Salisbury Sound in Seattle, WA. Nicholas started his career working for GE Nuclear Energy in 1957 and was the 7th person to be badged at Vallecitos Nuclear Center. He was one of the original instructors in San Jose at the Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) Training Center to teach the servicing of the newly constructed BWR fleet across the world. Bettye’s life spanned much of the 20th century, and she was an active participant in many of the sweeping changes which occurred during those years. She lived through the Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, WWII, and the huge westward migration triggered by those events. She was both a Rosie the Riveter on planes and a Wanda the Welder on Victory ships. In 2004, Bettye served as Grand Marshall for Pleasanton’s Veterans Day Parade, which honored “Home Front” workers like Rosie the Riveter. Maria was born and raised in Costello Branco on the Island of Faial, Azores Islands, Portugal until she and her husband, Jose Duarte Brandao, married in 1953 and then immigrated to America in 1960 with their two young daughters Maria and Mary. They went on to have two more daughters and a son, Olympia, Kathleen, and Carlos. It is with great sorrow that the family of Stevan F. Pittl announce his passing. Steve was born August 30, 1941 and died suddenly and unexpectedly on May 21, 2024 at the age of 82. Steve was born in Vukovar, Yugoslavia to Stefan and Teresa (Ther) Pittl, the same year the Axis powers invaded Yugoslavia in World War II. At the age of 4, along with his older sister Mary, Steve and his parents fled from Vukovar as the war continued, and after a short stay with family in Linz, Germany, they went to Ternberg, Austria. The family was placed in a displaced persons camp. It was here in Austria that Steve started school and learned to speak German in the hopes of one day making it to America. In 1951, at the age of 10 and with the help of Catholic Charities, the family traveled by boat and arrived in New York. The family of Sharon (Sherry) K. Romero want to announce the passing of their beloved mother and sister on May 5th. Sherry will be remembered for her strength, wonderful sense of humor, artistic talent, angelic voice, and notable love of her family, friends and dogs. While she passed away peacefully, she also endured a lengthy 12-year battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born in Washington, D.C. to her parents, Isabel and Howard Latimer during World War II. Her father was a pilot and lost his life in a plane crash just weeks after little Sherry was born. Isabel moved back to her parent’s home in Ohio for support in caring for her daughter. Several years later, Isabel met a handsome Navy officer named Paul Rundall. Paul also had a young daughter, Sandra, who was only four years older than Sherry. Isabel and Paul fell in love and married in 1950. They later moved to Arlington, Virginia. Wayne was the beloved husband of the late Carol (Cuffe) Davis with whom he shared over 45 years of marriage. He was also the devoted father of the late Christopher Davis. Anthony H. (Tony) Costello, patriarch of one of Pleasanton’s deepest-rooted families, died April 26 at the family’s Birdland-area home of more than 50 years. He was 93. Tony was surrounded at his passing by family and his wife of 69 years, Joan, who set out with him on a true journey when his job promotion persuaded them to move from the East Coast to Pleasanton in 1973. The city looked very different then. Downtown was mostly a rumor, the Hacienda Business Park didn’t exist and Pleasanton’s population had not yet reached 20,000. But Tony saw a place of vast possibilities and believed that his family – eight children, including a 9-month-old – could thrive there. By the time of his passing, Tony and Joan had 25 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, and the vast majority of the West Coast Costellos continue to live, work and attend school in the area. Nada was born on June 3, 1931 to Angela and Anton Jarošin in Celje Slovenia (then Yugoslavia). She often recounted fond memories of her childhood in Slovenia: time spent with her grandfather Karl Pajk, trips with her parents, bicycle rides and hikes in the Savinijan Alps, time on the Adriatic coast, and her joy of gymnastics. While she loved the nature and beauty of her homeland, her time there was disrupted by war and Nazi occupation. Her family was separated, and family members and friends were lost to the ravages of war. After the war, as a young woman, Nada coached a Slovenian gymnastics team, and one of her fondest memories was taking her team to the Rome Olympics in support of the Yugoslav teams. On Wednesday March 13, we lost a bright light. Gay Fremier-Grimm was a strong woman with many interests and talents. She practiced Christian Science her whole life and was a staple in First Church Christ Scientist, Danville. In her over 20 year career as a Human Resource Director, she helped and was an inspiration to many. Gay was an artist- scrapbooking, photography, drawing and painting. She was an incredible mother and best friend to her daughter, Jeannine- always a shoulder to lean on and a supportive ear. Also an amazing wife, Gay and Gordon enjoyed traveling abroad, cruising, and trips to her childhood hometown, beautiful Carmel. In 2017 she became a nana and it suited her beautifully. Don passed away peacefully during his sleep on March 11, 2024 in his Pleasanton home. Just the way he wanted to go! He was born in Evanston, Illinois. Growing up in Kenilworth and Chicago, he also enjoyed a family summer home in Spread Eagle, Wisconsin. Don enlisted in the Navy in July 1944. During WWII he was stateside as a Flight Line Plane Captain. In 1948 he married his wife, Jean Page. They raised their two children, Tom and Linda, in the Montclair district of Oakland, CA and later moved to Pleasanton, CA. Don worked in the asphalt industry for over 35 years. He was honored to be a member of the American Legion and he was a Master Mason. Don loved flying and anything having to do with aviation. He played the organ and piano and liked fishing and animals. Willard and Dorothea Johnson. Their family of six moved frequently. At one home near Oklahoma City’s Tinker Air Force Base, he watched World War II aircraft pass overhead daily. Young Will became enamored of aeronautics and decided to become a pilot. His father was a talented music instructor, performer, and band director; under his tutelage, Willard showed early promise as a cornetist, leading high school groups to two State championships while in 7th grade. She was born Rosanne Celine Morrissey on November 20, 1933, in Dublin, Ireland, one of five children born to Patrick and Katherine Morrissey. Rose met the love of her life Maurice Holmes in Ireland. They married in 1956 and immigrated to Boston, MA later that year before making their way to California in 1962. They adopted three children, Garrett, Candy, and Scott. Born on October 10, 1932 in Leoben, Austria, he spent his childhood in Shanghai, China, one of the only countries in the world that would accept Jewish refugees. Heinz and his family lived in a small apartment above his father's store, in an area known as the Shanghai Ghetto. It was not an easy life, but hard work, resilience and a sense of humor helped sustain them. After arriving in San Francisco in 1948, Heinz attended Lowell High School, graduated from UC Berkeley, and received his master's degree in educational counseling from Penn State. He and his late wife Lisa Gewing were married for over 50 happy years, raising their two daughters in Oakland, before moving up the California coast. Stan was born in Northeast Minneapolis, Minnesota, on March 18, 1930 to Stan and Helen Klescewski, both of whose families immigrated from Poland. Stan grew up in Minnesota and Wisconsin during the Great Depression with seven other siblings. Before finishing high school, he ran away from home at the age of 16 and joined the Air Force in 1949. He served for 3-1/2 years receiving jet engine mechanic training in Indiana and serving in the Korean War (Skull Airbase in England). Freddie Leon Houston, head football coach at Los Banos and San Ramon High Schools and later co-founder of Mission Hope Day Program passed away at the age of 91 on November 30, 2023 in Pleasanton surrounded by his family. We are grateful for the thoughts and prayers and will continue to celebrate his life and remember him, today and forever as a beloved Husband, Father, Coach and Friend. Born in Gloster, Mississippi, to Dudley and Beatrice Byrd, on July 13, 1926, Merle was the eldest of four siblings. Her colorful life started here, where her father owned a small trucking company, hauling gravel. The family left Mississippi in 1941 with their beloved dog, Poochie, in a black Chevrolet, headed for California where Dudley would find work. Born in San Jose, he attended Oakland schools, and upon graduation from Fremont High School, went to work for his father’s business, C.G. Silla Music Company. Two years later he joined the National Guard, and a year after that, he married Gail Killian, his high school sweetheart. Before being discharged from the Guard, Rich was sent overseas to serve a year in Korea. After that, he returned home to go back to work in what later became the family business, Silla Music Company. After their father (C.G.) retired, Rich, together with his brother Joe, ran the business until they both retired in 1991. Rich had a full life with Gail, his beloved wife of nearly 67 years. As the son of a 35-year veteran of the Oakland Fire Department, Steve joined the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department (LPFD) in 1974. His younger brothers Mark and Chris would end up working as firefighters as well (Alameda County and Berkeley) to cement a Pinto family legacy committed to fire protection in the East Bay. On February 26, 1978, Steve would marry the love of his life (Stella), and would remain happily married for 45 years. They moved to Livermore and had two daughters (Stephanie and Kristina) who attended Livermore schools and would follow their mom’s lead by ultimately working as educators for LVJUSD. As a man of faith, Steve was generous with his time assisting on projects both big and small at the Resurrection Greek Orthodox Church in Castro Valley. Beulah Annette Shark also known as Nana, age 85, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2023 at her home in McDonough, GA. Annette was born on January 15, 1938 to Irene Christian and William Christian, Sr. in McKeesport, PA. She was the eldest of three brothers and two sisters. She graduated from McKeesport High School in 1955. She married Philemon Shark, Jr. in 1955 and their 19 year wedded union produced four children. They moved to California in 1966. She was a mail carrier and Shop Steward for the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1992 after 25 years of service and later earned her certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Annette enjoyed traveling, listening to music, taking care of children, watching football, going to church, celebrating birthdays and holidays, cooking, baking, and spending time with friends and family. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Jim Walker was the hardest of hard workers. Interested in everything and everyone, he was known for peppering new acquaintances with questions. It was impossible to embarrass him, as he didn't care what others thought or said about him. Generous and kind, he saw the good in people that others may have given up on. Jim's many friends and large family, both in Australia and the United States, mourn his passing on August 31, 2023, in Biloela, Queensland. His loving wife, Deirdree, was at his side. James Hugh "Jim" Walker was born in Livermore, California, on January 20, 1943, to Dr. Robert Hugh and Eugenia Marie O'Shea Walker of Pleasanton. "Bob" Walker was a veterinarian and rancher and "Genie" was a housewife and bookkeeper for their veterinary practice. On August 17, 2024, we mourn the loss of our father Subhash Mahajan, PhD, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Davis, who passed away one year ago. Dr. Mahajan was born in 1939 in Gurdaspur in the Punjab province of British India. He attended Punjab College and the Indian Institute of Science, majoring in Materials Science. He then completed his PhD at the University of California (Berkeley), where he met and married Sushma Mahajan (nee Sondhi). After Berkeley, the couple moved to Denver and then the United Kingdom, where he worked for the Atomic Energy Research Agency at Harwell. The family grew: two sons were born in the UK, Sanjoy and Sunit Mahajan. In 1971, a recruitment team from Bell Laboratories enticed Dr. Mahajan to Murray Hill, New Jersey, where he remained for twelve years, working on twinning and perfecting silicon crystals for the rapidly advancing electronics technology. Another son was born, Ashish Mahajan. After Murray Hill, he took a post as Professor of Materials Science at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Our dear Mother passed away 10 years ago today. Mother was born on a chicken ranch on Wilbeam Ave. in Castro Valley Ca. She was the third daughter to a family of five sisters. Her parents were proud emigrants from England. Mother was a bit of a tomboy. She enjoyed time with her father taking trips to Petaluma to replenish the chick supply. Her Dad taught her how to garden, a talent she enjoyed her entire life. She was skilled in growing vegetables and her many flowering plants, roses and orchid collections. Edie attended Castro Valley Grammar school and She graduated from Hayward High School class of 1939. Mother and her friends would meet on Sundays for their weekly horseback riding or tennis games. On one of these occasions she was introduced to Hollis Hanson. They became fast friends and in time they were engaged. They married in 1940. Dad was a carpenter from a family of home builders. The happy couple set up housekeeping in Oakland before settling in Hayward. They welcomed a family of five children that they dearly loved, Janice, Kenwood, Marjorie, Leslie and Ronald.
