Susan Conway Mathews of Pleasanton, CA, passed away on December 1, 2021.

She was born Susan Jane Conway in Galesburg, IL, March 18, 1942, the second daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Francis (Marjorie E. Silcox) Conway. She grew up in Clovis, New Mexico, and graduated from Hockaday School for Girls in Dallas, TX in 1959. She received a Bachelor’s degree from Scripps College, Claremont, CA, in 1963, and a Master's in Human Resources and Organization Development from the University of San Francisco in 1989.

Susan had been a Bay Area resident since 1964. She was a former Vice President, Benefits and Payroll, at Bank of America, and former Director, Retirement Administration, and Director, Senior Management Compensation and Benefits, for the University of California, Office of the President. She and her husband, Tony Mathews, moved to Pleasanton in 1997. She was a 60-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and a current member of Chapter WB, Pleasanton.

Susan was a favorite of all her friends and family. She loved to laugh and easily made other people laugh with her creative and quirky sense of humor. She wanted to know as much as she could about the people she loved. She remembered details, was always accepting and encouraging, and went out of her way to be helpful. Her passing is a great sadness for all who knew her.

She is survived by stepdaughters Erin Ascher of Petaluma, and Kristin Hurocy of Riverbank; three grandchildren: Alex Ascher (Macey) of Turlock, Brooke Ascher, and Bella Ascher of Petaluma; one great-granddaughter, Lainey Ascher of Turlock.

Also surviving are her brother, John Conway (MJ Wetherhead) of Austin, TX; nephews Paul Comstock (Ree Hertzson) of Cottonwood, AZ, Stephen Comstock (Jean Deal) of Bethesda, MD, and Matthew Comstock (Jennifer) of Estes Park, CO, and niece Kerri Mathews Martinez of Discovery Bay, CA; grandnieces Madison Comstock, Sydney Comstock, Arianna Hertzson and Gabrielle Hertzson, and grandnephew Jack Comstock. She was predeceased in 2013 by Tony Mathews, her husband of 41 years, and in 1993 by her sister Anne Conway Comstock, of Houston, TX.

At Susan’s request there will be no memorial service.

Contributions will benefit the Program for Continuing Education, a needs-based grant program. It provides one-time financial assistance to women who find it necessary to return to school, to complete a degree or certification that improves their marketable skills for employment to support themselves and/or their families.
